Introduction-What is CYLEXPERT?

CYLEXPERT is an internet accessible intelligent tool that enables estimation of a rotation rate range in the rotating cylinder electrode that should be able to simulate mass transfer influenced corrosion in seven field geometries. These field geometries are:
  1. straight pipe
  2. non-circular duct
  3. annulus
  4. curved pipe with curvature between 0° and 180°
  5. wall jet region of impinging jet
  6. downstream of a flow expansion
  7. flat plate

The intelligent tool uses the best available hydrodynamic correlations to estimate the range of rotation rates for the geometry in question. Then from these calculations it uses an Expert System to provide guidance as to the best range of rotation rates for the situation. Finally, CYLEXPERT provides guidance as to how to approach analyzing data to determine if corrosion is controlled by mass transfer or some other velocity sensitivity. This tutorial provides the following:
  • a step-by-step procedure for using CYLEXPERT using a real-life example
  • a brief overview of the rotating cylinder electrode and the experimental technique for using it
  • information and guidance on the hydrodynamic relationships for a smooth cylinder as used in CYLEXPERT to relate conditions to other geometries
  • information on the influence of surface roughness as commonly occurs in the presence of corrosion
  • some remarks on the controversy surrounding use of wall shear stress vs. mass transfer coefficient
